- Moving dates and seasonality — Certain days and times of the year are more expensive than others. In general, summer tends to be a busy month for movers. Due to increased demand, you can expect rates to be higher from May to September. If you have flexibility with your moving dates, ask the Mayflower agent for the most cost-effective dates possible.
- Distance — Generally speaking, the farther the move, the more expensive the move.
- Size of the home — The larger your home, and the more stuff you have to move, the more expensive the move. For instance, a four-bedroom furnished home will likely cost more to move than a studio apartment.
- Weight of your belongings — Long-distance moving costs are based on the weight of your belongings. The heavier the items, the more expensive the move. To save money, we recommend lightening your load by purging unnecessary items before moving day.
- Valuation coverage — Mayflower will include their Full Value Protection option in your moving quote. Customers can choose to opt-out if they prefer more basic coverage. Mayflower also has additional protection options that customers can add to their moving quote.

While we imagine this type of personalized service isn’t cheap, it certainly may be worth paying up for if you need an individualized moving plan. It’s also worth noting that Mayflower does not offer instant online quotes. Mayflower’s agents must survey your home — either virtually or in-person — before giving you a moving estimate.

Step-by-Step Moving Process with Mayflower Transit
Step 1: Request a quote online or by phone — With Mayflower, you can request a quote online by entering your origin, destination, move date, the size of your home, any add-on services needed and contact information. The moving company will then contact you to give you a quote and set up a time to survey your belongings.
Step 2: Schedule an in-home estimate or virtual survey — A Mayflower representative will call to confirm your moving details and set up a time for an estimator to survey your belongings. If customers prefer not to have anyone come to their homes, they can opt for a virtual survey of their belongings. This can be conducted via video chat on their phones. Make sure to purge any large items you don’t plan on moving before the survey to get the most accurate estimate possible.
Step 3: Mayflower Move Coordinators will help plan the move — Once you decide to hire Mayflower to move your belongings, one of their move coordinators will assist you with the planning process. If you need any add-on services, such as packing assistance, packing supplies, additional valuation coverage or temporary storage, your move coordinator should be able to assist you with this.
Step 4: Pack your belongings — When you’re ready to begin packing, make sure you have the right moving supplies at your disposal. Step 7: The shipment arrives at its destination — According to Mayflower, an operator will contact you by phone or stop by your home to make sure you are ready to accept the delivery. Customers can request additional waiting time for an added cost if they’re not ready to accept the delivery. Check all household goods as they’re unloaded off the truck for damage. Direct the movers where to place your boxes and belongings. Once the move is complete, make sure to save all your moving documents, including a signed copy of the Bill of Lading.
Mayflower Moving and Storage Protection Plans
Mayflower offers comprehensive protection options to ensure that your household belongings are protected. We should note that their valuation coverage is not the same thing as moving insurance. We recommend that everyone check their existing insurance policies to see what household belongings are and aren’t covered while in transit.
Mayflower includes basic Full Value Protection upfront in its initial moving quotes. If customers prefer to opt-out of the Full Value Protection option, they will still have basic Released Value Protection. While Mayflower offers an additional protection option and other programs that customers can select with their moving quote, these options aren’t available for all moves. Full Value Protection
This protection plan is automatically included in a Mayflower moving quote. According to Mayflower, “the standard amount of Full Value Protection is calculated by multiplying the estimated weight of your shipment by $6 per pound.” This gives you considerably more liability coverage than the most basic option, the minimum liability valuation plan. If you decide to go with Full Value Protection, you’ll need to fill out a High-Value Inventory Form. On this form, you should include all items that are valued at $100 or more. This will ensure that you receive the replacement value (or actual value) of the items if they should become lost or damaged while in transit.
More protection options
- Minimum Liability Valuation — Prefer to opt-out of Full Value Protection? Customers will receive Released Value Protection, which is the most basic liability coverage offered by interstate moving companies. It’s automatically included in the cost of a long-distance move, and the federal mandate for the coverage is 60 cents per pound per item.
- Increased Declaration — If you’re moving items that are particularly valuable, it might not be a bad idea to pay up for extra protection. This option allows you to declare a higher value than what’s included in the basic Full Value Protection. It’s an additional charge, and customers can increase their valuation amount at any time before their shipment is loaded onto the truck.
